WHAT’S IT LIKE LIVING IN A CONTAINER CABIN?

Living in a shipping container is not like living in a house, the space is efficient and requires almost no maintenance, giving you more time to enjoy the best of indoor/outdoor living like when you camp. There’s a bit of adventure, without all the exposure of camping because the metal walls don’t leak or let critters in, whether you leave food out or not. Depending on the model you choose, you’ll be encased in high-efficiency insulated walls, have lights and a phone charger, heating and a kitchen, all without stepping out into the elements.

CAN I USE IT YEAR ROUND?

Absolutely, all models except Porter are insulated with a thick layer of closed-cell spray foam and thermal windows to give it exceptional thermal efficiency. The stove will keep you warm in the winter, and cross ventilation and a solar-powered fan can cool it in the summer.

WHAT MAINTENANCE IS REQUIRED?

This will probably be the most maintenance-free, pest-free home you’ll ever have. The container is weather-tight, with marine grade epoxy sealing the Corten steel skin. You can close it up and come back anytime and move right in.

IS THERE ANY SITE PREPARATION NEEDED?

Your Contanium cabin doesn’t require a foundation, utility hookups, or paved access. All you need is a level bed of gravel or piers to place it on. We will provide a simple set of instruction for preparing the site. If you do want a foundation, utilities, or have a challenging location in mind, our placement and moving guide will answer many of your questions, or you can contact us for an installation review.

We have also cultivated a network of upstate New York contractors who can prepare your site, depending on your location. Just ask, and we’ll find you the help you need.

DO YOU DELIVER?

Delivery is an optional service we’re happy to provide for an average of $2-3/mile from the fabrication site. Once you’ve picked your spot we’ll give you an exact price quote based on the distance and ease of site access (we had to drag one to the top of mountain, so we want to know what we’re getting into before we commit to a price). While we’re based in Brooklyn and focused on upstate living, we’re able to deliver your cabin anywhere in the world!

CAN I RELOCATE IT LATER?

Definitely. The same kind of flatbed truck that delivers your cabin can also relocate it. Because there are no utility hookups or foundation it’s a simple process to pick it up and drop it in another location.

HOW LONG UNTIL I CAN GET ONE?

Typical fabrication times are 6-8 weeks from the day we receive your order. Custom features will add a few weeks, depending on what you’re having done.

DO I NEED A BUILDING PERMIT?

We recommend that you file for a permit with your local building department, and we’ll provide all the necessary engineering drawings for approval. In many locations our designs are classified as hunting cabins, which are easily approved with minimal modifications. If you need assistance with the process, we do offer an optional permitting service, just ask for details.

CAN THE DESIGN BE CUSTOMIZED?

While the models listed on the site are our standard designs, we will work with you to design and finish your cabin in any way you choose. If you prefer to finish it yourself, choose a Porter or Bethel model, or we can go as far with the buildout as you’d like. Custom pricing will be determined based on your requests.

ARE CONTAINER HOMES CHEAPER?

In a word, no. There are many benefits of container homes, but compared to the cheapest, conventional “stickbuild” house, you can expect around 25% more for a unit finished with the high quality material and design integrity that we consider essential for the work we do.
